At the time the Berlin Wall collapsed on November 9, 1989, the East German Ministry for State Security employed more than 170,000 unofficial "informants" — individuals who spied on their friends, family, and coworkers on behalf of the state.

Set in the final decade of East Germany's existence, Feierabend — from the German for "quitting time" — follows one man's journey from a husband and factory worker to a cog in the Stasi's ever-present intelligence machine. The fictional tale asks what values are most preeminent when faced with impossible choices — and whether individual values can exist in a totalitarian state at all.
